Laura Herron, PhD

Laura Herron, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist licensed in Virginia, DC and PsyPact states (see map). She provides individual and couples therapy in person and via Telehealth for adults of all ages.

Dr. Herron takes a warm, empathic, and collaborative approach to therapy, listening carefully to support clients in building insight, identifying goals, and taking active steps toward living a more meaningful, values-centered life.

She has trained and worked in a variety of clinical settings, including university counseling centers, VA hospitals, and private practice.  She is trained in Emotion Focused Couples Therapy and the Gottman Method for Couples.

Stephen Heim, PhD

Stephen Heim, Ph.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1976 with an internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Dr. Heim taught in the Psychology Department at the University of Missouri before coming to Charlottesville. He has been the chief psychologist at several Commonwealth of Virginia facilities and adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia. He is one of the founding partners at Charlottesville Psychological Associates.

Dr. Heim has received extensive training in Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy and is the only clinician in the central Virginia area trained in this technique. He has also developed a specialty in consultation and evaluation for child custody issues, where he has a special interest in relocation or "move away" cases. Dr. Heim sees adults and late adolescents in individual psychotherapy, specializing in patients who have had difficulties in previous attempts at treatment.

Jane Christmas, PsyD

Jane Christmas, Psy.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and
psychoanalyst who has been in private practice since 2002. She
completed her undergraduate degree at Dominican University in
San Rafael, CA, her Psy.D. at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA,
and her postdoctoral training at the University of California San
Francisco (UCSF)/Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital
Infant-Parent Program. In 2016, she completed a certificate in
psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern
California.

In her practice, Dr. Christmas works across the adult lifespan with
individuals and couples on a variety of issues including
depression, loss, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. She has a
particular interest in and experience with the consequences of
childhood trauma and how it affects functioning in adult life. She
brings that expertise to the process of working through troubled
states of mind to more satisfying, less stressful ways of being.

Kirsten E. Franke, LCSW

Kirsten E. Franke, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), received her Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. Ms. Franke has 35 years experience working with individuals in their recovery from addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and trauma. She incorporates a variety of theoretical modalities including psychodynamic therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Internal Family Systems, all from a strengths-based perspective. As the former Clinical Services Director at The Women's Initiative in Charlottesville, VA, she served women in our community presenting with relationship, parenting, trauma, and other stress-related issues, in addition to providing clinical supervision for licensure.

She is also a certified yoga teacher and incorporates mindfulness based practices into her therapeutic work which serve as a foundation for meaningful and transformative healing experiences. Ms. Franke specializes in assisting adolescents/young adults, adults, and couples on their path to wellness and wholeness.

Claire de Andrade, PsyD

Claire de Andrade, PsyD, has over 20 years of experience as a licensed psychologist. She holds master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. She interned at the San Francisco Jung Institute and the UCSF Infant Parent Program. She is also the mother of twins.

She specializes in working with women who struggle with the emotional issues and experiences related to post-partum, parenting, menopause, empty nesting, careers beginning or ending, loss, or questions like “Who am I?” “What is my purpose?” or “Why am I so critical of myself?”

Claire offers warm, thoughtful, and collaborative psychotherapy to individuals who desire change, personal fulfillment, relationship satisfaction and overall well-being. While understanding that the historical basis of psychological issues plays a big part in freeing oneself from entrenched patterns, she encourages the work together to be focused on the present. She uses mindfulness practices, somatic awareness, inquiry and insight, psychological education and the latest in neuroscience discoveries to augment the sessions. Leela White, LPC

Leela White is a Licensed Professional Counselor serving adults, couples, and families. Leela has over 23 years of experience in the field. Emily Ludwig, PsyD

Emily Ludwig, Psy.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. She provides empirically-supported therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Problem Solving Therapy (PST), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and other Mindfulness-Based therapeutic approaches. Dr. Ludwig strives to help clients learn to live consistently and authentically through introspection, realistic goal setting, and skill building. Since then, she has provided individual mental health services to older adults residing in nursing homes, individuals suffering from chronic pain at a pain management and orthopedic surgical center, and most recently to the general public through a community outpatient practice.

Alyse Matlock Willett, MS, LPC

Ms. Willett is a Licensed Professional Counselor who provides individual psychotherapy to adolescents and adults seeking to improve their mental and emotional wellbeing. Ms. Willett has expertise in working with individuals who struggle with a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, chronic illness management, traumatic experiences, and transitional life stressors. She has a special interest in working with women’s health and currently holds a certificate in the specialty of Maternal Mental Health from Postpartum Support International.

Ms. Willett has worked with individuals in a variety of settings, including outpatient mental health, medical centers, residential treatment centers, and educational settings. Ms. Willett incorporates a holistic approach to psychotherapy, recognizing the intersectionality of an individual’s prior life experiences, socioeconomic factors, relationships, and health when conceptualizing treatment plans and goal setting.

Ms. Willett completed her master’s degree at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center with a focus on Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She completed her post-graduate supervised clinical hours while working at a residential treatment facility for adolescent females with a history of traumatization. In accordance with her academic training, she completed her internships through UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital. She holds additional training in treatment for PTSD and is certified in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD (PE-PTSD). Previously, she received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and English from The University of Texas at Austin.

Virginia Cox Evans, LCSW

Virginia Cox Evans is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been practicing counseling and psychotherapy since 1990. She provides individual, couple, marital, family and group therapy. Virginia graduated from the College of William and Mary with a BA in French and her MSSW from the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville. She also taught French, German and Latin at Kentucky Country Day School and coached field hockey and track in Louisville.

Virginia is a Founding Fellow for the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and has been a primary therapist in 2 CBT studies for the National Institute of Mental Health. She owns and directs the Pathways Center for Eating Disorders and looks forward to integrating her practice in the Charlottesville community. As a seasoned clinician, Virginia has worked inpatient, in community mental health agencies and in private practice. She collaborates with physicians, dieticians and other mental health professionals. Virginia was the former director of EAP at Martha Jefferson Hospital when she lived in Charlottesville in the 1990’s before returning to Louisville.

Besides utilizing a CBT approach, Virginia integrates other strategies in helping her clients actualize their full potential. From adolescence to later life years, Virginia helps clients improve their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Peter Sheras, PhD

Peter Sheras, Ph.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in independent practice since 1976. Dr. Sheras received his B.A. from Yale University in 1970 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1973. He obtained additional clinical training at Rutgers University and the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, California (Stanford University). He is a professor in the Curry Programs in Clinical and School Psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and also serves as the Chair of the department of Human Services at the University of Virginia. Dr. Sheras holds a diplomate in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and a diplomate from the American Board of Sexology and is a member of the National Academies of Practice. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and past president of the Virginia Psychological Association.

Dr. Sheras is the author of nine books and numerous articles on adolescents, parenting, and couples and relationship therapy. He is a frequent guest on National Public Radio and other broadcast stations. In additional to general practice, he specializes in working with adolescents and their parents, couples, and adults. He is a trained hypnotherapist and currently he offers individual and group therapy for pre-adolescents, adolescents, and adults as well as couples therapy and sex therapy. With his wife (Dr. Phyllis Koch-Sheras, clinical psychologist) he is a co-founder of Couples Coaching Couples, a national non-profit organization committed to the creation and maintenance of profoundly fulfilling relationships. He has experience in policy implementation and serves as a field staff member and advocate for the American Psychology Association in Washington, D.C. In addition to practice and lobbying, Dr. Sheras offers workshops in:
