Peter Sheras, Ph.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in independent practice since 1976. Dr. Sheras received his B.A. from Yale University in 1970 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1973. He obtained additional clinical training at Rutgers University and the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, California (Stanford University). He is a professor in the Curry Programs in Clinical and School Psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and also serves as the Chair of the department of Human Services at the University of Virginia. Dr. Sheras holds a diplomate in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and a diplomate from the American Board of Sexology and is a member of the National Academies of Practice. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and past president of the Virginia Psychological Association.
Dr. Sheras is the author of nine books and numerous articles on adolescents, parenting, and couples and relationship therapy. He is a frequent guest on National Public Radio and other broadcast stations. In additional to general practice, he specializes in working with adolescents and their parents, couples, and adults. He is a trained hypnotherapist and currently he offers individual and group therapy for pre-adolescents, adolescents, and adults as well as couples therapy and sex therapy. With his wife (Dr. Phyllis Koch-Sheras, clinical psychologist) he is a co-founder of Couples Coaching Couples, a national non-profit organization committed to the creation and maintenance of profoundly fulfilling relationships. He has experience in policy implementation and serves as a field staff member and advocate for the American Psychology Association in Washington, D.C.
